How do I load a Maytag Jetclean dishwasher?

No matter what dishwasher detergent I use, half the dishes are still dirty after they're washed. I'm trying to arrange the dishes so that there is no overlap. The dishwasher was made around 1960, and seems to run fine. Why are so many dishes still coming out with food on them?
