Question about the movie Alien?

This is from the 1st alien movie, you know the monster with no eyes and the inner mouth. The lady, not Ripley but the other one. What the heck happens to her. It shows you the tail coming at her but when Ripley is running down the hallway you can hear a lot of weird sounds as she dies. What does it do to her?
